Benchmark Nifty index ended sharply lower at 24825 spot levels after a cut of 495 points from its previous closing values following STT hike announcement in Union Budget.

Selling pressure was seen across the board as Mid and Small cap indices were down 2.24% & 2.73% respectively.

All sectoral indices, barring IT, ended deep in red. Amongst them PSU bank index was the worst performer, down 5.57% followed by Metal, Mid and Small Financial Services, Oil & Gas and Chemicals index that were down 4.05%, 3.65%, 2.86% & 2.62%.

The STT hike caught the market off guard, resulting in intense selling pressure across the board. Technically, the Nifty index settled below the upward-sloping trendline support as well as its 1-year EMA. The chart structure has further weakened with the breakdown. We anticipate prices to stabilize in the next couple of sessions around the 24600–24400 spot zone.
