US Election, Fed and BOE meeting to dictate global markets move this week- Daily Market Update 4 Nov 2024

The US presidential election will be held on Nov. 5 between Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican challenger Donald Trump. Besides politics, the attention will be on the Federal Reserve meeting from Nov. 6-7 where policymakers decide whether the US economy and inflation are cooling enough to warrant another rate cut. Bank of England will also make its own rate decision with a similar expectation of a 25-bps cut.

Global Stock Market Today

  • US equity markets settled higher in range 0.40% to 0.80%.
  • European equity markets settled higer by 1 %.
  • Majority of Asian Equity markets are trading in green.
  • GIFT Nifty is little changed, Nifty futures likely to open around 24300 levels (as on 8:30 AM).

 

News highlights from across the globe

  • Most indices of the Asia pacific region are trading in green in early trade on Monday, ahead of key events in US this week, including election outcome and the Federal Reserve’s decision.
  • Brent crude was trading 1.6% higher at $74.27 a barrel.

 

Important news updates from the domestic front

  • Hero MotoCorp reported an 18% Year-on-Year increase in total October sales at 6.79 lakh units, while scooter sales declined 5% to 43,304 units.
  • Zomato: Investee Adonmo completed a fundraise on Sept. 25, reducing Zomato’s shareholding in Adonmo to 17% from approximately 19%.
  • SML Isuzu: October total sales fell 8.2% YoY to 801 units, with passenger vehicle sales down 11.9% YoY to 407 units and cargo vehicle sales down 4.1% YoY to 394 units.
  • Premier Energies subsidiaries secured orders totalling Rs 560 crore from two major independent power producers.
  • NALCO: Sanjay Lohiya assumed the role of chairman and managing director, effective today.
  • Sun Pharma: The US District Court of New Jersey issued a preliminary injunction, halting the launch of the Leqselvi drug until a favourable court decision or the expiry of the patent in question.
  • Zen Technologies reported Q2 net profit of Rs 63.4 crore, up from Rs 13.6 crore YoY. Revenue rose to Rs 242 crore from Rs 66.5 crore YoY. Ebitda increased to Rs 80 crore from Rs 18.9 crore YoY, with margins expanding to 33.1% from 28.5%.

 

Nifty Overview & Outlook

Benchmark Nifty index settled tad above 24300 levels on Muhurat trading day after adding 99 points to its previous closing values.

Broader markets outperformed the benchmark as Mid and Small cap indices gained 0.71% & 1.03% respectively.
All sectoral indices, tracked at NSE, settled in green. Amongst them, Auto index was at the top of the tally, gained over 1% followed by Realty, Consumer Durable and Oil & Gas index that gained close to 1% each.

Technically, Nifty index is trading in a congestion zone i.e. 24050-24500 spot levels. Going ahead, We reiterate our short term sideways view on Nifty index till it is trading in above mentioned trading range. Either side break from this range will lead the markets in that direction.

 

Derivatives Overview & Outlook

Last Friday, no significant change was seen in all major index futures on the price front, whereas on open interest front, Finnifty futures added around 7% of open interest as short buildup.

Majority of the sectoral indices settled on a positive note. Amongst them, long buildup was observed in Banking stocks.

On options front, put writing along with call writing was seen at multiple strikes. Maximum put positions are at 23000 PE followed by 24000 PE, maximum call positions are at 24800 CE followed by 24300 CE.

 

Institutional Trading Activity

Last week, FIIs sold stocks worth Rs 5200 Cr in the cash segment, bought stocks futures worth Rs 4421 Cr and sold index futures worth Rs 362 Cr. DIIs were net buyers in the cash segment to the tune of Rs 6649 Cr during the week.
