Indian shares poised to open higher on easing oil; state election results eyed- Daily Market Update 4th May 2026

Indian shares are likely to open higher on Monday, supported by easing oil prices amid some signs of some de-escalation in the Middle East conflict, while results of key ​assembly elections will also be in focus. Brent ​crude, which jumped to a four-year high of $126.41 a barrel last week, has eased to about $108.

Nifty Overview & Outlook

The benchmark Nifty index ended lower 23997 spot levels after a cut of nearly 200 points from its previous closing values.

The broader markets fell in line with the benchmark as Mid and Small cap indices were down 0.52% & 0.78% respectively.

Majority of the sectoral indices tracked at NSE ended in red. Amongst them, Metal, PSU Bank, FMCG, Realty and Consumer Durables were the worst performers, down in range 1.50% to over 2%.

Technically, the Nifty index is hovering in a congestion range, with immediate support around the 23800–23550 spot levels and resistance placed around the 24350–24550 spot zones. A breakout in either direction from this range will dictate the next short-term move.

 

Derivatives Overview & Outlook

Last Thursday, all index futures moved southward on short buildup as Nifty, Banknifty, Finnifty and MidcpNifty futures added around 6.4%, 5.5%, 4.3% and 5.1% of open interest respectively.

All F&O sectors, barring Technology, settled on a negative note. Amongst them, Banking, Finance and Metal stocks witnessed maximum addition of short positions.

On option front, call writing along with some put addition was seen at multiple OTM strikes. Maximum positions are at 25000 CE and 23000 PE followed by 24000 PE.

 

Institutional Trading Activity

Last week, FIIs sold stocks worth Rs 16207 Cr in the cash segment, sold index futures worth Rs 5582 Cr also sold stocks futures worth Rs 2763 Cr. DIIs were net in the cash segment to the tune of Rs 11585 Cr during the week.
